Amazon River Cruise

A cruise down the Amazon River is arguably the most gratifying natural adventure on the planet. The adventurer is embraced inside Mother Nature’s Cradle of Life as they travel through the world’s biggest rainforest, which spans nine nations and encompasses 40 percent of South America. The Amazon River starts in Peru’s Andes foothills and runs east for 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometers) to the Atlantic Ocean.

The world’s greatest diversity of plant and animal species are found in the Amazon jungle, including 20% of all bird species, call the Amazon their home. It houses 40,000 plant species, 427 animals, 1,300 birds, 378 reptiles, over 400 amphibians, and about 3,000 freshwater fishes.

On this small-ship cruise, expert naturalist guides will take you on speed boat excursions to experience close encounters with the extremely diverse wildlife, take you on nature hikes, and remote villages to learn the uses and customs of the local inhabitants.

Our small-group excursions of no more than eight guests allow close encounters with wildlife, ecology, and culture, reducing our environmental impact and turning an Amazon cruise journey into a very personal experience.

Our Amazon cruise provides the comfort and luxury necessary for safe and exciting sailing through the stunning Amazonian rainforest. A once in a lifetime experience!

SEVEN NIGHTS – EIGHT DAYS EXPLORING THE HEADWATERS OF THE AMAZON ONBOARD AN UPSCALE SMALL SHIP WITH THE BEST NATURALISTS AND SERVICES IN THE AREA, BY FAR

Itinerary in Brief

Day 1
IQUITOS / AMAZON RIVER

When you arrive on a morning flight*, our staff will greet you warmly and take you to a nearby restaurant for lunch. The afternoon’s activities include an introduction to the ancient city of Iquitos and the chance to visit an indigenous Amazon community.

As you board the Aqua Nera in the early evening, settle into your roomy suite and start one of life’s most incredible adventures. Gather at the restaurant for the first of many Amazonian cuisine experiences designed by Aqua Nera consulting chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, whose restaurant, ámaZ, is one of Peru’s most well-known dining places, following an introduction to our naturalist guides and a standard safety drill.

Day 2
YARAPA RIVER / CLAVERO LAKE

We sailed from the Amazon River to the Yarapa River in our comfortable boats. Prepare your binoculars for sloths, black collared hawks, and tropical songbirds. Line-fish for the infamously fierce piranhas of the Amazon while our naturalist guides tell tales of Lake Moringo.

We continue sailing to Lake Clavero in the late afternoon, where locals get around in old-fashioned dugout canoes. Visit Amazonian natives who warmly welcome you to their community or go swimming in the lake’s tranquil waters.

Day 3
YANALLPA RIVER / DORADO RIVER

By boat, we explore the Yanallpa River’s black water tributaries before disembarking to go on foot through the dense Amazonian rainforest. Later, we reboard the ship and embark on a dark expedition along the El Dorado River, searching for rare nocturnal species.

Day 4
NAUTA TOWN / VILLAGE VISIT / BIRTHPLACE OF THE AMAZON

In the morning, take a guided visit to the local market and marvel at the regional produce of the Peruvian Amazon, and sample exotic snacks if you wish.

In the afternoon, witness one of the great spectacles of the Southern Hemisphere, the birthplace of the Amazon River. By nightfall, you will meet the new passengers who signed on for the four-night trip, as we start our journey together along the Marañon River.

Day 5
YANAYACU-PUCATE RIVER / LISBOA TOWN

Rise with the sun to observe birds along the Maraon River in the morning and have breakfast amidst the jungle. Later, go swimming, kayaking, or canoeing in the Yanayacu-Pucate River as we search for the fabled pink river dolphins. Visit a nearby village in the afternoon to connect with the locals and see the schoolchildren.

Day 6
SAMIRIA RIVER

Today’s early risers are rewarded with a full-day tour, a picnic lunch to the sounds of the jungle, and fishing on the Samiria River’s murky waters. After lunch, we head out in skiffs next to the banana boats delivering jungle goods while looking for pink river dolphins on the trip back to the Maraon River.

Day 7
NAUTA CAÑO RIVER / JUNGLE WALK IN CASUAL

Set out on a morning wildlife excursion on the fantastic black water Nauta Cao River to start the day.

We’ll go on a jungle hike in the late afternoon in Casual’s firm-soil forest, searching for flora and fauna that may include medicinal plants, insects, and poison dart frogs. Learn more about the many rainforest ecosystems and strata. Utilize our high-tech telescope at night to gaze at the sky and identify the stars, planets, and milky way.

Day 8
ARRIVAL IN IQUITOS / MANATEE RESCUE CENTER / TRANSFER TO THE AIRPORT

Take a guided morning tour of the neighborhood market to admire the Peruvian Amazon’s local products and, if you like, try some exotic foods.

Before disembarkation, head back to the Aqua Nera for breakfast. Visit the Manatee Rescue Center en route to the airport, where abandoned Amazonian manatees recover before being released back into the wild.
