Ultimate Inca Experience Tour Description

Terraces trace the Andean hillsides, ancient salt ponds step down a mountainside, and original Inca streets remain part of daily life. This luxury Machu Picchu tour connects Peru’s remarkable archaeological sites with the people and traditions of the Sacred Valley. Its deliberate pace allows time for both guided discovery and the pleasure of being in each place.

After an overnight stay in Lima, you fly to Cusco and descend directly into the lower Sacred Valley for a gentler introduction to the Andes. Three nights at Tambo del Inka provide a comfortable base for exploring Pisac, Moray, the Maras Salt Mines, and Ollantaytambo. Along the way, you encounter Andean textile traditions, visit Pablo Seminario’s ceramic workshop, and spend meaningful time with the Tambococha community, where agriculture and local customs remain closely connected to the land.

The journey to Machu Picchu begins aboard Inca Rail First Class, following the Urubamba River into cloud forest. An overnight stay at Sanctuary Lodge, beside the archaeological entrance, places you close to the site for two guided Machu Picchu visits. Each entry follows its assigned circuit. Together, they offer complementary perspectives on the citadel whenever ticketing permits. You then return toward Cusco aboard the Belmond Hiram Bingham, with live music, an observation bar, and a choice of onboard dining experiences.

In Cusco, two nights at Palacio Nazarenas allow you to explore the Cathedral, Coricancha, Sacsayhuamán, and San Pedro Market. Carefully chosen meals, including a Sacred Valley hacienda, Wayra, and a tasting dinner at MAP Café, add another dimension to this journey through the Inca world.

Why Choose This Peru Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu Journey

  • Sacred Valley of the Incas in Peru

    Perfect Pacing and Thoughtful Acclimatization

After flying to Cusco, travel directly to the lower Sacred Valley rather than spending your first nights at the city’s higher elevation. Three nights there create time to settle in, explore at a measured pace, and enjoy Tambo del Inka before the journey continues to Machu Picchu and Cusco.

  • Tambo del Inka in Peru's Sacred Valley

The Right Hotels in the Right Places

Begin at Wyndham Grand Costa del Sol Lima Airport, spend three nights at Tambo del Inka, stay beside Machu Picchu at Sanctuary Lodge, and finish with two nights at Palacio Nazarenas. Each hotel supports the route as well as the experience, from a convenient arrival in Lima to valuable time close to the Machu Picchu citadel.

  • Machu Picchu archaeological site in Peru

    Two Guided Machu Picchu Visits

This luxury Machu Picchu tour includes two guided entries to the citadel. A first visit follows your arrival from the Sacred Valley, with a second guided visit the following day. Machu Picchu operates with assigned circuits, so the visits are planned to provide complementary perspectives whenever ticketing permits. Staying at Sanctuary Lodge beside the entrance also places you exceptionally close to the site.

  • Belmond Hiram Bingham luxury train in Peru

    Two Distinctive Train Journeys

Travel to Machu Picchu Pueblo aboard Inca Rail First Class, with lunch served as the Sacred Valley gives way to cloud forest. Return toward Cusco aboard the Belmond Hiram Bingham, enjoying Andean scenery, live music, an observation bar, and a choice between a three-course dinner or lighter refreshments during the journey.

  • Andean textile traditions in Peru

    Culture Beyond the Famous Sites

Explore the living Inca town of Ollantaytambo, learn about Andean textile traditions, meet members of the Tambococha community, and visit Pablo Seminario’s ceramic workshop. These encounters complement visits to Pisac, Moray, the Maras Salt Mines, Machu Picchu, and Cusco, connecting Peru’s archaeological heritage with traditions that continue today.

  • MAP Cafe dining experience in Cusco, Peru

Dining That Belongs to the Journey

Dining is integrated into the experience rather than added as an afterthought. Enjoy lunch at Hacienda Huayoccari, UNU Restaurant, Wayra, and Inka Grill, along with dinner at Las Manos Restaurant. An included lunch and cocktail at Sanctuary Lodge, dining aboard the Belmond Hiram Bingham, and a seven-course tasting dinner at MAP Café add another dimension to the journey.

  • Small group travel in Peru's Sacred Valley

A Small Group With Room to Explore

Limited to a maximum of 10 guests, the expedition offers attentive guidance and a comfortable rhythm throughout the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Cusco. Travelers who prefer to explore with their own party can also ask an Expedition Advisor about making the itinerary a private Peru journey.

Ultimate Inca Experience - Frequently Asked Questions

Planning and Availability

What is included in the Ultimate Inca Experience?
The eight-day journey includes seven hotel nights, an NPE Expedition Leader and local guides, specified ground transfers, two premium trains, guided visits and entrance fees, and the meals listed in the itinerary. Domestic flights are arranged by NPE and charged separately.
Is the Ultimate Inca Experience available as a private Peru tour?
Yes. In addition to the scheduled small-group departures, NPE can discuss making this journey private for your travel party. Contact an Expedition Advisor for availability and a proposal based on your preferred dates.
How many guests join a scheduled departure?
Scheduled departures have a maximum of 10 guests. This small-group format allows for attentive guidance and a comfortable pace throughout the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Cusco.
When should I book?
Contact NPE as soon as you have a preferred departure in mind. Machu Picchu entries, Sanctuary Lodge, and the premium train services have limited availability and require coordinated reservations.
What is the best time to take this Machu Picchu tour?
The published departures are in May and September, months selected for exploring the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Cusco. Mountain weather can change, so pack for both sunshine and possible rain.

Machu Picchu Experience

How many times will we visit Machu Picchu?
The itinerary includes two guided entries: one after arriving from the Sacred Valley and a second the following day. Each visit follows its assigned ticket, entry time, and circuit.
Why does the itinerary include two Machu Picchu visits?
Machu Picchu is visited through designated circuits, and one entry does not cover the entire archaeological site. Two guided visits provide more time and, when ticket assignments allow, complementary perspectives on its architecture and setting.
Do we receive exclusive access to Machu Picchu?
No private or after-hours access is promised. NPE arranges two guided entries under the site’s official ticketing rules and stays at Sanctuary Lodge beside the entrance, reducing travel between the hotel and the citadel.
Are the Sun Gate or Inca Bridge included?
Neither walk is included in the published itinerary. Access to additional routes depends on separate ticketing, regulations, physical requirements, and availability; ask your Expedition Advisor about any possibilities before booking.
What makes this a luxury Machu Picchu tour?
The journey combines a stay beside the archaeological entrance, two guided visits, Inca Rail First Class, the Belmond Hiram Bingham, carefully selected hotels, and a small group of no more than 10 guests.

Altitude and Health

What is the altitude in Cusco?
Cusco is approximately 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) above sea level. The Sacred Valley is lower, at roughly 2,800 meters (9,000 feet), while Machu Picchu is lower still.
How does the itinerary approach altitude?
After landing in Cusco, the group travels directly down to the Sacred Valley and spends three nights there before visiting Machu Picchu and returning to Cusco later in the journey. Individual responses to altitude still vary.
Can travelers experience altitude discomfort?
Yes. The itinerary’s sequence can make the transition more comfortable, but it cannot eliminate altitude-related symptoms. Discuss any health concerns and appropriate precautions with your physician before travel.
Is guidance available during acclimatization?
Your Expedition Leader and local guides can provide practical support and help you respond if you feel unwell. Guests should report symptoms promptly and follow their medical professional’s advice.

Hotels and Trains

Which hotels are included?
The itinerary includes one night at Wyndham Grand Costa del Sol Lima Airport, three at Tambo del Inka in the Sacred Valley, one at Sanctuary Lodge beside Machu Picchu, and two at Palacio Nazarenas in Cusco.
What is the Belmond Hiram Bingham?
It is the premium train used for the return journey from Machu Picchu Pueblo toward Cusco. The onboard experience includes live music and an observation bar, with a choice of a three-course dinner or lighter snacks and cocktails.
Which train takes us to Machu Picchu?
The group travels from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu Pueblo aboard Inca Rail First Class. Lunch is served during the journey through the Sacred Valley and into cloud forest.
Are all the hotels luxury properties?
The hotels were selected for comfort and their role in the journey. Sanctuary Lodge is especially valuable for its location beside Machu Picchu; its rooms are relatively compact, and the scheduled Standard Patio Rooms do not have direct citadel views.

Experience and Activities

What cultural experiences are included?
The journey includes Andean textile traditions, a visit to the Tambococha community, a traditional home in Ollantaytambo, Pablo Seminario’s ceramic workshop, and Cusco’s San Pedro Market, alongside guided archaeological visits.
What will we see in the Sacred Valley?
You explore Pisac, Moray, the Maras Salt Mines from designated viewpoints, and Ollantaytambo. The itinerary also includes cultural encounters, distinctive meals, and three nights at Tambo del Inka.
What is included in Cusco?
Guided visits include the Cathedral, Coricancha, and Sacsayhuamán. You also visit San Pedro Market, enjoy time at leisure, and have a seven-course tasting dinner at MAP Café.

Logistics and Practicalities

Are flights included?
International and domestic flights are not included in the land price. NPE arranges the domestic flights within Peru and bills them separately so the group can travel on coordinated services.
What meals are included?
Breakfasts are included on Days 2–8, lunches on Days 2–8, and dinners on Days 4–7. The day-by-day itinerary identifies the meals and featured dining experiences; dinner on Day 3 is at your leisure.
Are airport and ground transfers included?
The ground transfers described in the itinerary are included. The journey uses shared shuttle buses between Machu Picchu Pueblo and the citadel area, followed later by a group transfer from Poroy to Cusco.
Are gratuities included?
Gratuities for luggage porters, transfer assistants, and restaurant staff for included meals are covered. Tips for the Expedition Leader, local guides, and drivers are not included.
What travel documents should I check?
Check the passport and entry requirements that apply to your nationality well before departure. Your Expedition Advisor can help you review trip logistics, but each traveler is responsible for having the required documents.
Should I purchase travel insurance?
NPE strongly recommends coverage for cancellation, interruption, baggage problems, medical emergencies, evacuation, and repatriation. Review your policy’s terms to make sure it suits this itinerary.
What should I pack?
Bring layers for changing temperatures, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and a light waterproof jacket. NPE sends a departure-specific recommended packing list approximately 90 days before travel.
Is this journey suitable for older travelers?
Many activities involve walking on uneven surfaces, steps, and time at altitude. The listed activity level is easy to moderate, but suitability depends on individual mobility and health; discuss specific concerns with your physician and Expedition Advisor.
Is there free time during the expedition?
Yes. The itinerary leaves time to enjoy Tambo del Inka, provides an evening at leisure on Day 3, and includes a free afternoon in Cusco on Day 7.
