Travel by charter aircraft, jet boat, and small river vessel into regions few travelers ever reach. Getting There
Your expedition package does not include international airfare. Plan to arrive in Port Moresby no later than early afternoon on Day 1. Your room at Airways Hotel is available from 2:00 PM. If you arrive earlier and would like early room access, additional charges may apply.
New Paths Expeditions highly recommends arriving one day early to rest after your international flights. The team can assist with additional hotel nights and arrangements.

Arrival in Port Moresby
Arrive in Port Moresby, clear immigration and customs, and meet your New Paths Expeditions representative for the transfer to Airways Hotel, located five minutes from the airport. In the afternoon, enjoy a privately guided visit to the National Museum for an introduction to Papua New Guinea’s cultural and natural history. Later, gather for a welcome cocktail, pre-departure briefing, geographic orientation, and welcome dinner.
Overnight: Airways Hotel Dakota Wing. 
Dinner - Day2
Charter Flight to Karawari and Embark Sepik Spirit
Transfer to Jackson’s Airport for your flight to Mount Hagen, then connect with a private chartered flight to Karawari. This morning flight crosses the highlands before descending into the tropical rainforest of the Karawari River. On arrival, travel by jet boat to the Karawari and Krosmary Rivers junction, with lunch planned on board the Sepik Spirit.
The Sepik Spirit, inspired by native spirit houses, is a small river cruiser and your home for the next three nights according to the day-by-day itinerary. In the afternoon, visit a local village for your first insight into the tribal traditions of the river people.

Breakfast Lunch Dinner - Day3–4
Explore the Headwaters of the Sepik River
Spend two days exploring remote villages along the Sepik River headwaters by jet boat. Among the communities you may encounter are the Crocodile People, who undergo ceremonial scarification to honor their crocodile totem and ancestors. You may be invited into sacred spirit houses, where traditions, symbolism, and ancestral beliefs remain deeply preserved.
Time on the river is complemented by conversations on board, where the group reflects on what you are witnessing and explores the cultural, spiritual, and historical context of the Sepik. Birdwatching is excellent along the river and around clan areas, with frequent opportunities to observe species in this rich environment.

Explore the Nature and Cultures of Karawari
After breakfast, transfer to Karawari Lodge, perched on a ridge above the river and dense jungle of the Sepik Basin. This region is defined by communities whose lives remain closely connected to the land through rituals, storytelling, food gathering, and daily village life.
Visit a nearby village to learn about harvesting and preparing sago, the staple food of Karawari communities. Continue by jet boat through surrounding waterways, where stilted villages and dugout canoes reveal daily life along the riverbanks. You will also learn about Kamongabi, a forest and river spirit rooted in ancestral beliefs dating back to the era of headhunting. Birdwatching opportunities may include the Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise.

Chartered Flight to Tari, Home of the Huli
After breakfast, fly from the Karawari lowland rainforest to the Tari Highlands, the territory of the Huli Wigmen. On landing, drive approximately 30 minutes to Ambua Lodge, your base in the cloud forest.
Ambua Lodge is set at 7,000 feet on the edge of pristine cloud forest, overlooking the Tari Valley below Tari Gap, one of the finest birding locations in the world. Walks along the lodge’s trails may include traditional vine bridges, hidden waterfalls, and forest interpretation by your guide. The surrounding forest has recorded up to 13 species of birds-of-paradise, with possible sightings including King-of-Saxony, Stephanie’s astrapia, ribbon-tailed astrapia, and sicklebill birds-of-paradise.

Tari, Land of the Huli
The Tari Basin, surrounded by forested mountain slopes, is home to the Huli clans, one of the largest ethnic groups in the Southern Highlands and among the most culturally intact in Papua New Guinea. First contacted by outsiders in 1935, the Huli have maintained traditions shaped by ancestral beliefs, ritual practices, inter-clan boundaries, pigs as wealth, and ceremonial identity.
Over two days, enjoy early morning birding at the lodge and Tari Gap, followed by visits to Huli communities. Learn about elaborate wigs adorned with natural fibers, flowers, and bird-of-paradise feathers, and visit a traditional wig school to understand how these headdresses are created and what they signify. Afternoons may include nature walks, orchid garden visits, additional birding, Huli question sessions, or time to enjoy the lodge gardens and valley views.

To Mount Hagen on a Private Flight
After an early breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for your charter flight to Mount Hagen, crossing highland grasslands and mountain landscapes. Mount Hagen lies in the upper Wahgi Valley, a region with some of the earliest evidence of agriculture anywhere in the world.
On arrival, continue by scenic drive to Rondon Ridge, set above the valley in a natural highland setting. The lodge is surrounded by primary forest, with notable orchids and strong birdlife. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided nature walk and birding excursion around the lodge grounds.
Overnight: Rondon Ridge. Breakfast Lunch Dinner - Day10
Birds-of-Paradise & Mud Men
Begin with early morning birding and selected cultural encounters. Transfer to Kumul Lodge, one of Papua New Guinea’s most renowned birding sites, where you enjoy coffee and breakfast while observing birdlife around the lodge and feeding areas. There are excellent chances to see several species of birds-of-paradise, including the remarkable ribbon-tailed astrapia.
Later, visit a group of Mud Men, originally from the Goroka region, whose distinctive clay masks and traditions are among the most recognizable cultural expressions in the Highlands. Depending on timing and opportunities, you may briefly visit a Melpa community or local market before returning to Rondon Ridge. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided nature walk around the lodge grounds with further birdwatching opportunities.

Intimate Pre-Show Sing Sing
Today’s gathering takes place beside the lodge and brings together more than 100 men and women from over 10 clans from the Highlands, coast, and islands. Smaller than the main event, it offers a more intimate setting, fewer tourists, and excellent opportunities for close cultural interaction and photography.
Early in the morning, observe participants preparing their bilas, painting faces and bodies, and adorning themselves with bird-of-paradise feathers. Move among them respectfully, interact, photograph in a relaxed setting, and follow the performances into the grounds. With the lodge nearby, you have shaded seating and easy access throughout the day. You can return for lunch and then continue spending time with the clans as they gather around a traditional mumu, an underground cooking method using heated stones.
Overnight: Rondon Ridge. Breakfast Lunch Dinner - Day12
Mount Hagen Sing Sing and Return to Port Moresby
After breakfast, transfer to the Mount Hagen grounds for the Mount Hagen Sing Sing, the largest tribal gathering in the world. Spend the day immersed in an extraordinary event known for color, movement, sound, and cultural significance.
The festival brings together 60 to 100 tribes and thousands of participants in traditional dress and body paint. Coastal, lowland, and highland groups reveal the diversity of Papua New Guinea’s landscapes and cultures in one unforgettable day. After the event, transfer to the airport for the flight from Mount Hagen to Port Moresby. On arrival, transfer to your modern and comfortable hotel, located five minutes from the airport.

Explore Port Moresby
After breakfast, explore Port Moresby with a drive through the city, followed by a visit to a local market and Hanuabada, the “big village,” where traditional houses on stilts line the waterfront.
Continue to Nature Park, one of Papua New Guinea’s leading conservation and rescue centers. The park has an excellent collection of flora and fauna, offering opportunities to observe species that may have remained elusive during the expedition, including reptiles, amphibians, cassowaries, several birds-of-paradise, and a notable orchid collection. Those who wish may enjoy a light lunch at the park café before returning to the hotel. In the evening, gather for a farewell dinner with wine.

Book With Confidence
Deposits and Payments
To guarantee your space on the Papua New Guinea expedition, a deposit of $1,500 is required at the time of booking. The remaining balance is due 120 days before departure. New Paths Expeditions will use your deposit to secure domestic flights (both commercial and charter) within Papua New Guinea to reserve your seats. Domestic airfares are subject to change, and their cost will be added to your final invoice.
Cancellation Policy
If you wish to cancel your reservation, it must be done in writing by email. Domestic flight tickets are nonrefundable and cannot be transferred to another participant.
- Between deposit and 120 days before departure: $1,500 cancellation charge, plus domestic ticket cost.
- 119 to 91 days before departure: 50% of the total expedition cost, plus domestic ticket cost.
- 90 to 61 days before departure: 75% of the total expedition cost, plus domestic ticket cost.
- 60 to 0 days before departure: No refund.
If We Cancel
If the expedition is canceled by New Paths Expeditions because of low participation or extraordinary conditions, all payments made to New Paths Expeditions will be refunded in full. New Paths Expeditions cannot accept responsibility for other expenses incurred, including nonrefundable airline tickets.
If Events Beyond Our Control Occur
Travel to remote destinations involves risks beyond any operator’s control. We recommend trip cancellation insurance that covers trip interruption, evacuation, and repatriation. Due to limited medical services in Papua New Guinea, comprehensive coverage is particularly important.
Flexible, Interest-Free Payments
Your balance is due 120 days before departure. Payment options are provided after signed documents are received, including MasterCard, Visa, PayPal, and wire transfer.
