Luxury Egypt Tour Description

Monumental pyramids rise from the desert, temples line the Nile, and ancient history unfolds at a pace that gives each place time to breathe. This luxury Egypt tour brings together the country’s most significant archaeological sites with an intimate seven-night journey aboard a private dahabiya, revealing Egypt through its monuments, river landscapes, and quieter moments of daily life.

The journey begins in Cairo with the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, Saqqara, and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, offering a strong introduction to the civilizations that shaped this land. From Luxor, guests board the Nonia Dahabiya, a newly built traditional wooden vessel reserved exclusively for this small group, and sail slowly between Luxor and Aswan with stops at Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Bassawa Island, Gebel el-Silsila, Kom Ombo, and Philae.

An overland journey to Abu Simbel reveals the monumental temples of Ramses II and Queen Nefertari in one of Egypt’s most dramatic settings, before continuing to Aswan for a visit to a Nubian village and lunch at the historic Old Cataract Hotel. The journey then returns to Cairo for a final visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum, now home to the complete Tutankhamun collection in a single venue.

Throughout, the experience is supported by private air-conditioned transfers, an NPE Expedition Leader, five-star accommodations at Four Seasons First Residence Cairo, and refined onboard living aboard the dahabiya. It is a thoughtfully paced luxury Nile cruise and cultural journey designed for travelers who want Egypt’s essential places seen with clarity, comfort, and meaningful context.

Why Choose This Egypt tour

  • Egypt from Cairo to the Nile

This expedition connects Egypt’s most important archaeological landmarks in one carefully structured journey, from Cairo and the Great Pyramids of Giza to Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel, and the Grand Egyptian Museum. The route has been designed to create historical continuity, balancing monumental sites, time on the Nile, and a pace that allows each place to be experienced with greater clarity and depth.

  • Private Dahabiya Nile Cruise

Sail the Nile for seven nights aboard a privately chartered, newly built dahabiya designed for an intimate group. This traditional vessel offers refined comfort, modern amenities, and access to sites beyond the reach of standard river ships. Evenings are spent moored along quieter riverbanks, setting a relaxed rhythm for each day.

  • Complete, Well Paced Exploration

Multi-night stays in Cairo and an unhurried Nile itinerary create a natural flow, balancing major monuments with time to absorb context and meaning. The journey avoids rushed transitions, allowing space for reflection, conversation, and discovery.

  • Egypt’s Defining Archaeology

Stand before the Great Pyramids of Giza, explore Saqqara’s Step Pyramid, walk the great temple complexes of Karnak and Luxor, and journey to Abu Simbel by land. The experience culminates at the Grand Egyptian Museum, presenting Egypt’s ancient legacy in a contemporary setting.

  • Cultural Encounters

Along the Nile, visit a Nubian village and meet local families at Bassawa Island, gaining insight into daily life shaped by the river across generations. These encounters add living context to the monuments and deepen understanding of Egypt beyond its ancient past.

  • Expert Guidance

Throughout the journey, guests are accompanied by an NPE Expedition Leader together with expert licensed local guides. This layered leadership ensures historical depth, logistical excellence, and continuity from beginning to end.

Who This Journey Is For

Discerning travelers seeking a luxury Egypt experience defined by cultural depth, expert insight, and refined comfort. Ideal for those who value small groups, meaningful conversation, thoughtful pacing, and upscale services.

Who This Journey Is Not For

Travelers seeking budget travel, large groups, or fast paced sightseeing. This journey favors depth, comfort, and time over checklists.

Why Choose New Paths Expeditions

  • Small Groups That Stay Truly Small

New Paths Expeditions is built around small groups, not volume. In Egypt, that means a maximum of 16 guests, allowing the entire group to travel, dine, and explore as one cohesive party. The result is a more personal atmosphere, smoother logistics, and a level of ease that large departures rarely achieve.

  • Journeys Designed with Depth, Not Just Coverage

New Paths Expeditions does not build itineraries around checklists alone. Routes are designed to create context, continuity, and a stronger sense of place. In Egypt, that means beginning in Cairo with the Pyramids, Saqqara, and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization before continuing south to Luxor, sailing the Nile slowly to Aswan, reaching Abu Simbel by land, and returning to Cairo for the Grand Egyptian Museum. Each stage adds meaning to the next.

  • Educational Travel with Strong Interpretation

At the heart of every New Paths Expeditions journey is the belief that great travel should be intellectually rewarding as well as comfortable. Guests are accompanied by an NPE Expedition Leader together with expert licensed local guides, creating a layered experience of continuity, historical interpretation, and cultural context throughout the program.

  • Private Access and Higher-Quality Travel Design

New Paths Expeditions prioritizes private arrangements whenever they genuinely improve the guest experience. In Egypt, the Nile journey is built around the Nonia Dahabiya, chartered exclusively for this departure rather than shared with outside passengers. That choice creates a quieter onboard atmosphere, a more intimate scale, and access beyond the reach of standard commercial cruise departures.

  • Seamless Logistics Across Complex Destinations

Travel in Egypt involves visas, domestic flights, airport handling, transfers, site coordination, embarkation, and many moving parts. New Paths Expeditions manages these details from start to finish, including meet-and-greet service on arrival, private airport transfers, domestic flights arranged by NPE and charged separately, and on-the-ground coordination throughout the journey. Guests are free to focus on the experience itself rather than the mechanics behind it.

  • Personal Support Before Departure and on the Ground

From the moment you inquire until the moment you return home, your Expedition Advisor helps guide the planning process. Guests receive complete pre-departure materials, preparation notes, and travel guidance before departure, then continue to receive dedicated support on the ground through the Expedition Leader and local team.

Luxury Egypt – Frequently Asked Questions

Itinerary and Route

What exactly is the Luxury Egypt expedition?
This is a 13-day luxury small-group Egypt expedition combining five nights in Cairo, a seven-night private dahabiya Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan, an overland excursion to Abu Simbel, and a visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum. It is designed for travelers seeking cultural depth, expert interpretation, and private access rather than a standard commercial tour.
Where does the expedition begin and end?
The expedition begins and ends in Cairo, Egypt.
How long is the expedition?
13 days and 12 nights.
What regions and sites are visited?
The itinerary covers Cairo, including the Great Pyramids of Giza, Saqqara, the Grand Egyptian Museum, and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization; Luxor, including Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, the Valley of the Workers, and the Temple of Hatshepsut; the Nile corridor, including Esna, Edfu, Bassawa Island, Gebel el-Silsila, and Kom Ombo; Aswan, including Philae Temple, the Nubian Museum, the Old Cataract Hotel, and a Nubian village; and Abu Simbel, including the temples of Ramses II and Queen Nefertari.
Is there an optional extension available?
No extension is included in the current program. Please contact your Expedition Advisor for information about customized pre- or post-expedition arrangements in Cairo or elsewhere in Egypt.

The Dahabiya and Nile Cruise

What is a dahabiya?
A dahabiya is a traditional Egyptian sailing vessel used on the Nile since antiquity. The Nonia Dahabiya is a newly built example of this vessel type, designed to carry a maximum of 16 guests. It is significantly smaller than a standard Nile cruise ship and offers a quieter, more intimate experience of the river. Because of its size, it can reach sites and moorings that larger boats cannot access.
How is the dahabiya different from a standard Nile cruise?
A standard Nile cruise ship carries 100 to 200 passengers. The Nonia Dahabiya is chartered exclusively for this group and carries a maximum of 16. The difference affects the pace of the journey, the sites visited, the dining experience, the level of personal service, and the atmosphere on board. Larger ships cannot reach Bassawa Island or Gebel el-Silsila. The dahabiya can.
Is the dahabiya comfortable?
Yes. The Nonia Dahabiya features tastefully appointed private cabins, a spacious shaded sundeck, included meals, soft drinks and water during meals, and complimentary internet access. It is designed as a refined boutique experience on the water, not a budget vessel.
Who else is on board the dahabiya?
The Nonia Dahabiya is chartered exclusively for New Paths Expeditions guests. There are no outside passengers on board.
What meals are included on the dahabiya?
All breakfasts, lunches, and dinners are served on board during the cruise. Soft drinks and water are included during meals. A cooking class is also included during the cruise.

Archaeology and Cultural Experiences

Which archaeological sites are included?
The expedition includes the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and Valley Temple, the interior of the Pyramid of Cheops, Saqqara, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, the Valley of the Workers, the Temple of Hatshepsut, the Temple of Esna, the Temple of Edfu, Gebel el-Silsila, the Temple of Kom Ombo, the Temple of Philae, the Nubian Museum, the temples of Ramses II and Queen Nefertari at Abu Simbel, and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
What cultural experiences beyond archaeology are included?
Cultural experiences include a cooking class aboard the dahabiya, a visit to a local family at Bassawa Island to learn about daily life and farming traditions, a visit to a Nubian village near Aswan, and lunch at the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan, where Agatha Christie wrote Death on the Nile.
Why is Abu Simbel done overland rather than by plane?
Most Egypt operators run Abu Simbel as a day trip by air from Aswan. This expedition goes overland, approximately 3.5 hours each way, through the Nubian desert. The drive provides a sense of geographic scale, landscape, and context that a short flight cannot. The temples are experienced as part of Egypt’s southern frontier rather than as an isolated air excursion.
What is the Grand Egyptian Museum, and why is it significant?
The Grand Egyptian Museum opened in late 2025 near the Pyramids of Giza and is now home to the complete collection of King Tutankhamun’s treasures, displayed together for the first time in a single venue. Visiting it at the end of this expedition, after twelve days of temples and the Nile, gives the collection a depth of context that a standalone museum visit cannot provide.

Accommodations and Comfort

What hotels are used during the expedition?
Cairo accommodations are at the luxury Five-Star Four Seasons First Residence, a property in the Giza district with views of the Nile and, from select vantage points, the Pyramids. The Nile portion of the expedition is spent aboard the Nonia Dahabiya Luxury Nile Cruise, chartered exclusively for the group.
Are meals included throughout the expedition?
Meals are included as specified in the day-by-day itinerary. On the dahabiya, all breakfasts, lunches, and dinners are served on board. In Cairo, meals are included as indicated per day. Personal beverages at Cairo hotels and restaurants are not included.
Is the expedition comfortable for mature travelers?
Yes. The itinerary has been designed with pacing and comfort in mind. Transportation is private and air-conditioned throughout. Archaeological sites involve walking on uneven terrain, steps, and inclines, but the pace is measured and rest time is built into each day. Guests with specific mobility considerations are encouraged to contact their Expedition Advisor to discuss the itinerary in detail before booking.

Season, Weather, and Timing

Why does the expedition take place in February and March?
This departure is scheduled for late February and early March, a period many travelers consider favorable for exploring Egypt’s major archaeological sites. For detailed seasonal planning and packing guidance, please refer to your pre-departure materials or contact your Expedition Advisor.
What weather should I expect?
Weather conditions can vary between Cairo and Upper Egypt. Guests should expect warm days, cooler mornings and evenings, and generally dry conditions during this period. Final packing guidance is provided before departure.

Activity Level and Physical Requirements

What is the activity level of this expedition?
Moderate. The expedition includes walking at archaeological sites, museums, and temples, often on uneven terrain and stairs. Certain visits, including the interior of the Pyramid of Cheops and Abu Simbel, may involve more physical effort. Guests should feel comfortable walking for extended periods with regular breaks.
Is this expedition suitable for mature travelers?
Yes. The expedition has been designed to balance depth with comfort, and the pacing reflects the needs of intellectually engaged adult travelers. Guests with specific physical considerations are encouraged to contact their Expedition Advisor before booking.

Flights, Visas, and Logistics

Are international flights included?
No. International airfare is not included in the expedition package. Guests are responsible for booking their own international flights to and from Cairo International Airport.
Are domestic flights included?
Domestic flights are not included in the base expedition price but are arranged by New Paths Expeditions. The cost is $460 per person and is charged separately. These tickets are non-refundable under airline policy.
Do U.S. travelers need a visa for Egypt?
The entry visa fee for U.S. and Mexican passport holders is included in this expedition. Travelers holding other passports should contact their Expedition Advisor for guidance on visa requirements. Entry procedures are subject to change, and travelers should verify requirements before departure.
How early should I arrive in Cairo?
We recommend arriving at least one day before the expedition begins on February 19, 2027. Additional hotel nights in Cairo can be arranged upon request.
What luggage is recommended?
The domestic flights included in this itinerary allow one piece of checked luggage up to 50 pounds and one carry-on up to 17 pounds. Soft-sided luggage is strongly recommended.
What currency is used in Egypt?
The official currency of Egypt is the Egyptian pound, commonly abbreviated as LE. Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, many restaurants, and many tourist shops. ATMs are available at Cairo International Airport and at the Four Seasons First Residence.

Leadership, Guides, and Guest Experience

Who leads this expedition?
The expedition is accompanied by a New Paths Expeditions Expedition Leader throughout the program. Expert licensed English-speaking local guides are provided at each archaeological destination.
What makes New Paths Expeditions different from other Egypt tour operators?
New Paths Expeditions is built around small groups, educational depth, private access, and consistent quality from start to finish. The use of a privately chartered dahabiya, the inclusion of sites beyond the standard Egypt circuit, and the careful pacing of the program reflect a philosophy of meaningful travel rather than commercial volume. Every logistical element is managed so guests can focus entirely on the experience.
Is this expedition good for first-time travelers to Egypt?
Yes. The expedition is designed to provide a thorough and intelligently structured introduction to Egypt’s history and civilization, supported by expert interpretation at every site. The private transfers, managed logistics, and included visa fee reduce much of the complexity of traveling in Egypt.
