Kingdoms of Peru Tour Description

Imagine looking down across the immense desert figures of Nasca, standing before the extraordinary treasures of the Lord of Sipán, walking through the ceremonial compounds of Chan Chan, and watching hummingbirds gather near a stream in the Equatorial Dry Forest. Kingdoms of Peru brings these experiences together in a privately arranged cultural journey devoted to the civilizations, living traditions, wildlife and cuisine of the country’s coast.

Designed for travelers seeking depth beyond the conventional Cusco and Machu Picchu circuit, this 12-day Peru expedition follows a carefully constructed route from Lima and Paracas to Chiclayo, Chaparrí, and Trujillo. It reveals approximately 5,000 years of history through the Paracas, Nasca, Lima, Sicán, Lambayeque, Moche, and Chimú worlds, while connecting ancient achievement with the communities and landscapes that continue to define coastal Peru.

The southern coast introduces the journey through Afro-Peruvian heritage in El Carmen, the complex colonial history of Hacienda San José, the desert geoglyphs of Nasca, the Paracas Candelabra, marine wildlife of the Ballestas Islands, and the great pilgrimage sanctuary of Pachacamac. A market visit, cooking demonstration, pisco and wine tasting, Peruvian Paso horse presentation, and dinner beside the illuminated Huaca Pucllana reveal why food and living culture are inseparable from Peru’s history.

In northern Peru, the expedition enters one of the richest archaeological regions in the Americas. Guests explore the pyramids of Túcume and Bosque de Pómac, the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum, El Brujo and the Lady of Cao, Chan Chan, Huaca Arcoiris, and the Temples of the Sun and Moon. Knowledgeable local guides and specialists in archaeology and natural history bring context to these places throughout the journey.

The journey also includes a night inside Chaparrí Reserve, a community-owned conservation area protecting the Equatorial Dry Forest, endemic wildlife, and rescued Spectacled Bears. Carefully selected accommodations, ground transportation arranged for your party, regional meals and a well-balanced pace make this coastal Peru journey both enriching and comfortable.

An optional Lima pre-extension is available for travelers who have not previously explored the capital. A complete Machu Picchu and Cusco post-extension can also be added, allowing guests to experience Peru’s history in chronological order before continuing into the Inca heartland.

Why Choose This Peru Trip

  • Ancient civilizations and archaeological landscapes along Peru's Pacific coast

Five Millennia of Coastal Civilizations in One Coherent Journey

Rather than presenting isolated ruins, Kingdoms of Peru traces a broad historical arc through the cultures that flourished along the Pacific coast. Paracas and Nasca, the Lima culture, Sicán and Lambayeque, the Moche, and the Chimú are connected through their landscapes, religious centers, artistic traditions, political power, and responses to the desert environment.

  • Royal Tombs of Sipán, Lady of Cao, Chan Chan, and Moche archaeological sites

The Lord of Sipán, Lady of Cao, Chan Chan, and the Moche Heartland

This Peru archaeology tour includes several of the continent’s most consequential discoveries and sites. The Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum reveals the artistry and power of the Moche elite. El Brujo presents the Lady of Cao and the evidence of female leadership in ancient Moche society. Chan Chan and the Temples of the Sun and Moon complete an unusually rich exploration of northern Peru.

  • Aerial view of the ancient Nasca Lines in Peru

An Optional Nasca Lines Flight from Pisco

Guests may add an approximately 90-minute flight over the Nasca Lines, weather and visibility permitting. The optional experience allows the immense hummingbird, monkey, spider, condor, tree, and other desert forms to be appreciated from the air. The flight is charged separately and never misrepresented as included.

  • Afro-Peruvian music, coastal traditions, and local communities in Peru

    Living Afro-Peruvian and Coastal Traditions

The journey goes beyond archaeology through El Carmen, Hacienda San José, traditional music and dance, Peruvian Paso horses, fishermen using caballitos de totora, and encounters with local communities. These experiences reveal how the history of Peru’s coast continues through music, food, work, memory, and daily life.

  • Spectacled bear and wildlife conservation at Chaparrí Reserve

Wildlife and Community Conservation at Chaparrí

An overnight stay inside Chaparrí Reserve introduces one of Peru’s most distinctive ecosystems. Guided walks focus on the Equatorial Dry Forest, endemic birds, other wildlife, and the reserve’s community-based conservation work, including its Spectacled Bear Rescue Centre. Wildlife is observed responsibly and sightings are never guaranteed.

  • Peruvian cuisine, ceviche, pisco, and regional culinary traditions

Peru’s Cuisine as Part of the Cultural Story

Meals are not treated as an afterthought. The program includes a Lima market visit and cooking demonstration, wine and pisco traditions at Tacama, a Pachamanca demonstration, a ceviche and Pisco Sour class in Huanchaco, regional restaurants, and meals in memorable archaeological and historic settings.

  • Comfortable low-altitude expedition along Peru's Pacific coast

A Thoughtfully Paced, Low-Altitude Peru Expedition

The main expedition remains along the Pacific coast with no high-altitude travel. The route is structured with frequent stops, two-night stays where they matter most, and time to rest. The longest drive is approximately four hours and is broken by activities, while private air-conditioned transportation supports a comfortable journey.

Who This Journey Is For

Travelers who want to explore coastal and northern Peru with their own companions, expert guidance, archaeological depth, meaningful cultural encounters, regional cuisine, natural history and a comfortable pace. It is especially well suited to intellectually curious couples, families and friends; lifelong learners; archaeology and history enthusiasts; photographers; wildlife observers; and travelers who have already experienced the classic Inca route.

Who This Journey Is Not For

Travelers seeking a beach vacation, nightlife-focused trip, large motorcoach tour, high-altitude trekking program, or a rapid checklist of Peru’s most famous attractions. Kingdoms of Peru rewards curiosity, patience, and an interest in the civilizations, environments, and living traditions of the coast.

Why Choose New Paths Expeditions

  • Decades of Experience Across Peru

The expedition was crafted from decades of experience and close partnerships across Peru’s coastal and northern regions. The route brings together places that are often difficult to combine well, while preserving historical logic, realistic travel times, and a balanced rhythm.

  • A Journey for Your Traveling Party

Traveling with your own companions creates room for personal attention, easier movement through museums and archaeological sites, and more direct conversations with specialists and local communities. The route retains its historical logic while your Expedition Advisor helps shape the dates and details around your party.

  • Specialist Local Guidance

Experienced local guides and specialists in archaeology and natural history connect the major sites, living traditions, and conservation areas across the journey. Your proposal will identify the guides and services arranged for your departure.

  • Comfortable Logistics With Extra Care

Transportation is private, air-conditioned, and professionally driven. The main roads are paved and in good condition, bathroom stops are available frequently, and longer travel days are broken by meaningful visits. Guests receive planning support and complete pre-departure information before travel.

  • Honest Accommodation Choices

Hotels are selected from the finest practical options in each destination. Pullman Lima Miraflores, La Hacienda Bahía Paracas, Casa Andina Select Chiclayo, and DoubleTree by Hilton Trujillo provide comfort and useful locations. Chaparrí Ecolodge is intentionally simpler, without air conditioning or Wi-Fi, because staying inside the reserve makes the wildlife and conservation experience possible.

  • Culture, Nature, and Cuisine in Equal Measure

The expedition does not treat archaeology, wildlife, food, and contemporary culture as separate themes. Each reinforces the others, helping guests understand how civilizations developed within particular environments and how their legacies remain visible today.

Testimonials

Emily R.

★★★★★

Kingdoms of Peru offered exactly the depth we were looking for. The journey connected archaeology, living culture, wildlife, and food in a way that made each day feel meaningful. Sipán, the Lady of Cao, Chan Chan, and the Moche temples were extraordinary, but the smaller cultural encounters gave the expedition just as much value. The pacing was comfortable, the organization was excellent, and we never felt as though we were simply checking sites off a list.

Michael H.

★★★★★

I had visited Machu Picchu before, but northern Peru was completely new to me. This expedition revealed an entire side of the country that most travelers never see. The Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum was exceptional, El Brujo was fascinating, and Chan Chan was far more impressive than I expected. Our guides made the history understandable without oversimplifying it, and the small group created a relaxed and personal atmosphere throughout.

Susan T.

★★★★★

Chaparrí was one of the highlights of the journey. Staying inside the reserve was simpler than the other hotels, but that was exactly what made the experience special. We walked with local rangers, observed dry-forest wildlife, learned about the Spectacled Bear rescue work, and gained a real appreciation for community conservation. The combination of natural history and archaeology made this expedition feel unusually complete.

Robert J.

★★★★★

The itinerary was ambitious, but it never felt rushed. Longer travel days were broken by worthwhile visits, the vehicles were comfortable, and the hotels were well chosen for each location. I especially appreciated the balance between major archaeological sites and experiences such as El Carmen, Hacienda San José, the cooking programs, and the fishermen of Huanchaco. It was thoughtful, well led, and genuinely educational.

Patricia W.

★★★★★

The food experiences were much more than restaurant stops. The market visit, cooking demonstration, Tacama tasting, Pachamanca, northern cuisine, and Huanchaco class all helped explain the regions we were visiting. I loved how the culinary program reinforced the archaeology and cultural history instead of feeling separate from them. This was one of the most carefully designed cultural journeys I have taken.

Daniel C.

★★★★★

What impressed me most was the quality of the interpretation. Our Master Guide created continuity across the entire route, while the local specialists added detail at the archaeological sites and nature reserves. The Lord of Sipán, Lady of Cao, and Chan Chan became part of a much larger story about how people adapted to Peru’s desert coast. The journey was intellectually rewarding without ever feeling academic or exhausting.

Laura M.

★★★★★

This was an excellent choice for experienced travelers who wanted something beyond the standard Peru itinerary. The group was small, the logistics were smooth, and there was enough time to absorb the sites properly. From the Ballestas Islands and Nasca option to Chaparrí and the great civilizations of northern Peru, the expedition felt varied, coherent, and very carefully planned.

Getting There

International airfare is not included. You should arrive in Lima no later than the evening of Day 1. Arriving one or two days early is recommended, and New Paths Expeditions can arrange additional hotel nights and activities.

  1. Day1

    Arrival in Lima

Upon arrival in Lima, you are welcomed at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Miraflores. Peru’s Pacific capital, founded in 1535 and historically known as the City of Kings, offers a compelling introduction to the country’s many cultural layers. Depending on your arrival time, settle in and begin enjoying the coastal setting and atmosphere of Miraflores.

Lima, El Carmen, Hacienda San José, and Paracas

Depart Lima through the coastal desert toward Chincha. In El Carmen, explore the heart of Afro-Peruvian culture and learn how descendants of Africans brought to the coastal plantations created traditions expressed through music, dance, cuisine, and community life.

Continue to Hacienda San José, a preserved 17th-century estate closely connected to the sugar and cotton economy and the history of slavery in the Chincha Valley. A guided visit includes its architecture, courtyards, chapel, and underground passageways, followed by lunch. Continue to Paracas and enjoy dinner overlooking the bay.

Overnight: La Hacienda Bahía Paracas. (B) (L) (D)

Optional Nasca Lines Flight, Tacama, Pisco, and Paso Horses

Drive approximately 20 minutes to Pisco Airport for the optional Nasca Lines overflight. During the approximately 90-minute flight, weather and visibility permitting, guests may see several celebrated geoglyphs, including the hummingbird, monkey, spider, condor, tree, and the figure commonly called the Astronaut. The flight is charged separately.

Continue to Tacama, whose origins date to 1540, for an introduction to Peruvian wine and pisco production, a guided tasting, and lunch. A presentation of the Peruvian Paso horse highlights its naturally smooth gait and place in coastal culture. Return to Paracas for time to relax before dinner.

Overnight: La Hacienda Bahía Paracas. (B) (L) (D)
  4. Day4

Ballestas Islands, Coastal Wildlife, and Pachacamac

Walk to the nearby pier and board a speedboat for a shared excursion to the Ballestas Islands. Pause to see the Paracas Candelabra before continuing toward cliffs and arches used by colonies of marine wildlife. Depending on natural conditions, sightings may include South American sea lions, Humboldt Penguins, cormorants, Peruvian Boobies, pelicans, and other seabirds. Guests remain aboard throughout the excursion.

Return to the mainland and travel toward Lima, stopping at Pachacamac. Explore the museum and selected areas of this major Andean pilgrimage center, shaped through the Lima, Wari, Ychma, and Inca periods. Enjoy lunch in the Lurín Valley before continuing to Miraflores.

Overnight: Pullman Lima Miraflores. (B) (L)
  5. Day5

Lima Market, Cooking Demonstration, and Huaca Pucllana

Visit a lively local market for an introduction to the fruits, vegetables, seafood, herbs, and regional ingredients behind Peru’s culinary diversity. Join a local chef for a demonstration centered on ceviche and lomo saltado, followed by a tasting and selected beverages.

The afternoon is at leisure. In the evening, dine at Huaca Pucllana overlooking the illuminated adobe pyramid of the ancient Lima culture, bringing celebrated Peruvian cuisine and pre-Columbian heritage together in one setting.

Overnight: Pullman Lima Miraflores. (B) (D)
  6. Day6

Lima to Chiclayo, Túcume, and Pachamanca

Transfer to Lima Airport and fly approximately one hour north to Chiclayo. After arrival, check in and enjoy lunch before visiting Túcume, a complex of 26 pyramids associated with the Lambayeque culture and set within the Equatorial Dry Forest.

Walk among selected pyramids, visit the site museum, and continue to Horcones for time with local residents and a Pachamanca cooking demonstration. This ancient technique prepares food with heated stones and provides a memorable connection between archaeology, landscape, and living culinary tradition.

Overnight: Casa Andina Select Chiclayo. (B) (L) (D)
  7. Day7

Bosque de Pómac and the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum

The visit also includes community encounters, crafts, and panoramic views of the archaeological landscape.

Return to Chiclayo for lunch at Fiesta Restaurant. Later, visit the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum, one of South America’s outstanding archaeological museums, where the burial assemblages of the Lord of Sipán reveal the artistry, authority, and ceremonial world of the Moche. Chaparrí is a private, community-owned protected area covering habitats from semi-desert to foothill dry forest. The reserve protects numerous mammals and birds, including many endemic species, and operates Peru’s first rescue center designed specifically for Spectacled Bears. Travel south toward Trujillo, stopping for lunch in the old coastal town of Pacasmayo. Continue across desert and agricultural valleys to El Brujo and the site associated with the Lady of Cao.

Visit the archaeological complex and museum and meet members of the research team when available. The 2006 discovery of the Lady of Cao, a woman who held authority in the Chicama Valley approximately 1,700 years ago, significantly changed scholarly understanding of leadership in Moche society. Continue to Trujillo and check in at the hotel.

Overnight: DoubleTree by Hilton Trujillo. (B) (L) (D)

Continue to Huanchaco for a ceviche and Pisco Sour cooking class with ocean views. After lunch, meet fishermen who continue the approximately 4,000-year tradition of using caballitos de totora. Guests may have the opportunity to ride a reed craft, subject to conditions and personal choice.

Return to the hotel, then visit Trujillo’s main square during the best light for photography. Dinner is served at Club Central inside the historic Iturregui Palace.

Overnight: DoubleTree by Hilton Trujillo. (B) (L) (D)
  12. Day12

Enjoy a farewell lunch featuring modern Peruvian cuisine before transferring to Trujillo Airport for the flight to Lima and onward connections. Late check-out has been requested and will be confirmed closer to departure.

Archaeology, History & Cultural Experiences

The expedition examines approximately 5,000 years of coastal history, including the Paracas, Nasca, Lima, Sicán, Lambayeque, Moche, and Chimú cultural traditions, together with later colonial and contemporary history.
Which major archaeological sites and museums are included?
Confirmed highlights include Pachacamac, Túcume, Bosque de Pómac, the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum, El Brujo and the Lady of Cao, Chan Chan, Huaca Arcoiris, the Moche Huacas Museum, and Huaca de la Luna.
Why is the Lord of Sipán important?
The undisturbed royal burials associated with the Lord of Sipán transformed knowledge of Moche political authority, religion, craftsmanship, and funerary practice. The Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum presents the discoveries in exceptional depth.
Who was the Lady of Cao?
The Lady of Cao was a high-status Moche woman whose tomb was discovered at El Brujo in 2006. Evidence of her authority required scholars to reconsider older assumptions about leadership and gender in Moche society.
Why is Chan Chan important?
Chan Chan was the capital of the Chimú kingdom and the largest adobe city in the world. Its compounds, reliefs, walls, storage areas, and ceremonial spaces reveal sophisticated urban organization adapted to Peru’s desert coast.

Possible sightings include marine mammals and seabirds at Ballestas, endemic dry-forest birds at Bosque de Pómac and Chaparrí, hummingbirds, owls, nightjars, reptiles, insects, and other native wildlife. All sightings vary naturally.
What is Chaparrí Reserve?
Chaparrí is a private, community-owned and managed conservation area protecting approximately 38,412 hectares of Equatorial Dry Forest and related habitats in northern Peru.
Will guests see Spectacled Bears?
Chaparrí operates a rescue center with Spectacled Bears in large semi-wild enclosures, and wild bears also occur in the reserve. The program offers a strong opportunity to learn about and potentially observe the species, but no specific wildlife sighting can be guaranteed.
Is birding a major part of the journey?
Birding is integrated into Bosque de Pómac, Tinajones, Chaparrí, and selected travel stops. The trip is broader than a dedicated birding tour, combining natural history with archaeology, culture, and cuisine.

Accommodations, Meals & Comfort

Which hotels are used?

Local guides and specialists in archaeology and natural history provide interpretation along the route. The guides and leadership included in your own departure will be specified in your proposal.
What makes this tour different from a typical Peru tour?

How is a private expedition priced?
Pricing depends on your dates, party size, accommodation, and agreed services. NPE will provide an itemized proposal showing inclusions, exclusions, deposit, and payment terms before you book.

Yes. The route was designed to provide context, specialist interpretation, multiple-night stays, meaningful meals and encounters, and enough time to understand how archaeology, ecology, and contemporary life are connected.
Why should travelers visit northern Peru?
Northern Peru contains an exceptional concentration of pre-Inca cities, pyramids, royal burials, museums, dry-forest habitats, living fishing traditions, and regional cuisine. The Lord of Sipán, Lady of Cao, Chan Chan, and the Moche temples make it one of the most significant archaeological regions in the Americas.
