Itinerary in Brief

Day 1 
Arrive in Guatemala & transfer to Antigua

Upon your arrival in Guatemala, an NPE representative will meet and greet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in beautiful Antigua (1 hr. drive).

Antigua is among the world’s best-preserved colonial cities in the Americas. It is a mysterious and alluring tiny village that gives the impression that time may have stood still 300 years ago. The colonial architecture and stunning surroundings will attract you as you meander through the town on the cobblestone streets.

Day 2
Antigua walking tour & community cooking class

Embark on a guided walking tour of Antigua after breakfast, exploring its colonial monuments and rich history. Begin at the central plaza, learning about Guatemala’s colonization and contemporary issues. Visit landmarks like Palacio de Capitanes, City Hall, and the Cathedral Ruins. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before heading to San Miguel Escobar Town. Learn to cook a traditional Guatemalan dish in a local family’s home and savor your creation for dinner, immersing yourself in Guatemalan culture.

Day 3
Pacaya Volcano hike

Embark on an adventure to Pacaya volcano after breakfast. Located near Guatemala City, this active volcano offers panoramic views of its smoking cone and ancient lava flows. Hike the well-maintained trail through farmlands and pine forests to reach the desolate moonscape of the lava flows. Enjoy Guatemalan-style s’mores and a picnic lunch with a view of the crater before returning to Antigua for dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 4 
Iximche visit & transfer to Lake Atitlan

Embark on a scenic journey from Antigua to Lake Atitlan, with a visit to the Iximche archaeological site en route. Explore the Post Classic Mayan ruins, established in 1470 by the Kaqchikel Maya. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before arriving at your lakeside hotel. Relax and prepare for dinner, served at the hotel, as you immerse yourself in the beauty and history of Lake Atitlan.

Day 5
Birding & San Juan village visit

Embark on a journey to Rey Tepepul Reserve, nestled on the slopes of Atitlán volcano, renowned for its diverse bird species. Your expedition leader and local guide will lead you on trails, ensuring optimal birdwatching opportunities. Following your adventure, enjoy a private boat transfer to the charming San Juan village, known for its art galleries and authentic textiles. Immerse yourself in local culture before returning to your hotel for a relaxing evening.

Day 6
Chichicastenango Market & transfer to Guatemala City

Travel to Guatemala City with a stop at Chichicastenango, home to the vibrant native market showcasing Guatemala’s diverse cultures. Explore the bustling market, where vendors from various linguistic groups gather. Upon arrival in Guatemala City, meet your new expedition leader and visit the iconic church, significant in indigenous and Mayan history. Witness special ceremonies and religious practices if fortunate. Conclude the day with dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 7
Morning flight to Flores & Yaxha tour

Embark on a private transfer to Guatemala City airport and fly to Flores. Upon arrival, journey to the impressive Yaxha archaeological site, a Mayan ceremonial center in Peten. Explore its 500 structures, including pyramids and steles, with your guide. Enjoy a picnic lunch amidst the site’s beautiful landscapes, combining archaeology and ecological tourism, making Yaxha a must-visit destination in the region.

Day 8
Uaxactun full-day tour

Embark on a journey to the unique Uaxactun archaeological site, where an expert guide, Francisco, will lead your group. Learn about the community’s history and daily life, sustained by the forest for over a century. Explore the Astronomical Observation Complex, integral to Maya ceremonies. Enjoy lunch at a local cook’s house, featuring stories and a small archaeological museum. Return to the hotel for a well-deserved rest after an immersive cultural experience.

Day 9
Full Exploration of Tikal

Embark on a guided tour of Tikal National Park after breakfast, exploring ancient Mayan temples and learning about their history and disappearance. Encounter wildlife like monkeys and parrots along the way. Enjoy lunch amidst the jungle before returning to Flores for a self-guided visit. Conclude the day with dinner at the hotel accompanied by a folkloric music group, immersing yourself in the cultural richness of Guatemala.

Day 10
Flight to Guatemala City & departure
Today, after breakfast, transfer to the airport and fly back to the U.S. or continue to the Belice Extension

Transfer to Belice

Transfer to the Belize Border. At the border, you will cross on your own, and a different vehicle will meet you on the Belizean side.

After crossing the border, you will be met by your driver for transfer to your hotel (approx 2hrs).

Please note that an NPE Senior Local Guide will escort the extension.

Day 12

Xunantunich & Cahal Pech

Explore ancient wonders with a guided tour of Xunantunich Archeological Site, boasting the towering Castillo and breathtaking views of the Mopan River valley. Then, delve into Cahal Pech, once the regal abode of Mayan rulers, featuring temples, residential structures, and a royal burial chamber with treasures like jade masks. Immerse yourself in Belize’s rich history across these sites, each offering unique insights into ancient civilizations.

Day 13

Transfers to Belize City & flight to San Pedro

After breakfast, an NPE representative will transfer you to the airstrip to catch your flight back home.
