Atacama, Uyuni, and Titicaca Expedition Tour Description

Flamingos shimmer on crimson lagoons, volcanoes rise above silent deserts, and the Uyuni Salt Flats open into a white horizon under one of the clearest night skies on Earth. This Atacama, Uyuni Salt Flats & Lake Titicaca tour blends scenic drives, gentle walks at altitude, sundowners and meaningful encounters with local families to reveal the soul of the Altiplano. You’ll also enjoy exceptional landscape and nature photography opportunities throughout the itinerary.

The route is designed to feel effortless, with gradual acclimatization, multi night stays, and perfect pacing that lets you enjoy each experience in comfort.

You begin in San Pedro de Atacama, staying in town while exploring Moon Valley, the Tatio Geysers, small desert communities, and the sweeping viewpoints of northern Chile. Once acclimatized, you cross into Bolivia by private 4x4s, traveling past emerald and crimson lagoons and geothermal fields toward Uyuni.

Your base is the five star Palacio de Sal, built entirely of salt. From here you explore the world’s largest salt flats, visit Incahuasi Island with its towering cacti, enjoy an elegant lunch on the open salar, and experience extraordinary stargazing timed around the new moon.

You then fly to El Alto, descend into La Paz by cable car with outstanding views of the Royal Mountain Range, visit traditional markets, dine at award-winning Gustu, and explore the UNESCO site of Tiwanaku. The journey changes pace at Lake Titicaca, where a private boat takes you to the Uros floating islands, UNESCO Taquile, and the sacred Sillustani ceremonial towers before your flight to Lima.

It is an ideally paced Altiplano journey where remarkable landscapes, meaningful encounters, unique experiences, and comfort come together naturally.

Why Choose This Chile, Bolivia & Peru Trip

  • Perfect Acclimatization for Atacama, Uyuni & Lake Titicaca

Our south-to-north route provides the safest, most gradual ascent in the region, allowing even first-time Andean travelers to adjust with ease. Each excursion is sequenced to protect your comfort at every elevation.

  • The Best Stays in Iconic Locations

Stay at a wonderful 4★ property right in the heart of San Pedro de Atacama; the extraordinary Palacio de Sal, a true 5★ hotel built entirely of salt beside the Uyuni Salt Flats; Casa Grande Hotel (5★) in La Paz; and Casa Andina Premium on Lake Titicaca. Only one simple overnight is included due to remoteness.

  • Complete, Well-Paced Exploration Across the Altiplano

Multi-night stays and precise day planning create a natural rhythm, balancing landscapes, culture, archaeology, and genuine local encounters without rushed transitions. Explore Moon Valley, the Tatio Geysers, high-altiplano volcanoes, the Red and Green Lagoons, the Uyuni Salt Flats with Isla Incahuasi, and navigate the sacred waters of Lake Titicaca on a beautifully paced final chapter.

  • Archaeology From Tiwanaku to Sillustani

Visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Tiwanaku, cradle of pre-Inca civilization, and the chullpas of Sillustani overlooking Lake Umayo. Together, these sites reveal the origins, beliefs, and funerary traditions of the earliest Andean cultures.

  • Signature Scenic Experiences

Cross the Uyuni Salt Flats in comfort aboard 4×4 vehicles with guaranteed window seats. Enjoy panoramic views of La Paz from its iconic cable-car system. On Lake Titicaca, travel by private boat to the Uros floating reed islands and the UNESCO-recognized community of Taquile, visiting a section that avoids strenuous uphill walking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Atacama, Uyuni & Lake Titicaca – Frequently Asked Questions

Itinerary & Route Basics

What exactly is the Atacama, Uyuni and Lake Titicaca expedition?
This is an 11-day small-group or private expedition across Chile, Bolivia and Peru, designed for travelers who want a seamless, well-paced journey through the Atacama Desert, the Uyuni Salt Flats and Lake Titicaca. It blends boutique comfort, responsible acclimatization, nature experiences, superb photography opportunities and curated cultural encounters across the South American Altiplano.
Which countries and key sites does this trip cover?
You explore Chile, Bolivia and Peru, visiting San Pedro de Atacama, Moon Valley, the Tatio Geysers, the Uyuni Salt Flats, El Alto and La Paz, Tiwanaku, Puno, Uros and Taquile islands and Sillustani. Extensions include Easter Island (Rapa Nui), Santiago and the Chilean wine country, Potosí and Sucre, Arequipa and Colca Canyon and Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.
How long is the expedition and how is altitude managed?
New Paths Expeditions pioneered this route 25 years ago to make it ideal for proper acclimatization. The program is 11 days and 10 nights with gradual elevation gain. You start in Atacama, where several carefully planned activities help your body adjust before you move into the higher Altiplano toward Uyuni and finish around Lake Titicaca. The itinerary is engineered for safety, comfort and a natural progression through altitude.
How many travelers are in each group, and can you book a private trip?
Scheduled departures are guaranteed and operate with as few as two guests and a maximum of twelve. This ensures intimacy, flexibility and smooth pacing. Private departures can be arranged for couples, families or friends, following the same itinerary or a custom version. If you are interested in a private or personalized departure, please contact your New Paths Expeditions Expedition Advisor.
Can you travel this itinerary in reverse, beginning in Peru?
Yes. We run the route from south to north because this provides the ideal acclimatization process. If you visit high altitude before this expedition and you are already acclimatized, beginning in Lake Titicaca, continuing to Uyuni and ending in Atacama works well for private itineraries while maintaining comfort and safety. If you prefer to begin in Peru, please contact your Expedition Advisor.

Altitude, Health & Safety

Is this expedition safe at high altitude?
New Paths Expeditions specializes in safely operated high-altitude itineraries for travelers of many ages. This route ascends progressively and includes excursions designed to help your body adapt before crossing into the higher Altiplano. Your Leader monitors guest well-being daily and adjusts pacing and activities when needed. We have never had a case of altitude sickness on this itinerary thanks to this curated route and activity sequence. We encourage you to download the free expedition guide, which includes detailed information on activities and elevations.
Are there medical or age restrictions?
The expedition suits travelers in good general health, including many guests in their 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Travelers with heart, lung or chronic medical conditions should consult their physician before booking any high-altitude journey.
Do you need vaccinations or special health documents?
U.S. travelers need a yellow fever vaccination certificate for Bolivia. Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Our vetted partners, trained guides and safety protocols ensure a well-managed experience throughout Chile, Bolivia and Peru.

Season, Weather, Stargazing & Mirror Effect

What is the best time to take this expedition?
The ideal months are April through October, during the dry season, when roads remain open and conditions are stable. Clear skies make astronomy exceptional, the Altiplano is at its most accessible and Lake Titicaca offers consistent weather.
Do you plan your departures for stargazing?
Yes. All scheduled departures are planned to coincide with the new moon when we stay at the five-star Palacio de Sal, right on the Uyuni Salt Lake. This timing offers the highest chance of ideal conditions for the included stargazing experience on the salt flats.
Will you see the Uyuni mirror effect?
The mirror phenomenon occurs during the rainy season, roughly November through March, when shallow water creates the reflective surface seen in photographs. During these months, heavy rains may close certain routes, especially the Chile–Bolivia Hito Cajón border pass, so our scheduled departures avoid this period for safety and reliability. If experiencing the mirror effect is your priority, we can arrange a private mirror-season itinerary. Please contact your Expedition Advisor if you wish to travel during those dates.
How should you pack for high-altitude weather?
Days are cool and sunny, and nights can be very cold, especially in the Altiplano. Warm layers, a down jacket, thermals, gloves, a hat, UV protection and sturdy shoes are essential. Your Pre-Departure Pack includes a detailed packing list to help you prepare.

Hotels, Meals & Comfort

What kind of accommodations are included?
You stay in four- and five-star boutique hotels, including Palacio de Sal in Uyuni, Casa Grande in La Paz and Casa Andina Premium on Lake Titicaca. These properties offer premium comfort, authenticity and a sense of place without the excess of ultra-luxury resorts. Please note that some hotels may change due to availability. We highly recommend booking well in advance.
Is there a rustic night on this itinerary?
Yes. Because of the remoteness of the Bolivian Altiplano, one night is spent in simple local lodging after you cross the Chile–Bolivia border. This night is placed strategically between upscale stays to ensure comfort before and after.
What meals are included, and are dietary needs respected?
Nearly all meals are included except two free evenings in Atacama and La Paz. Highlights include a picnic on the Uyuni Salt Flats, a sundowner on the salt lake and dinner at Gustu, Bolivia’s most acclaimed restaurant. Dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice.
Is drinking water provided throughout the journey?
Yes. As on all NPE expeditions, safe drinking water is available at all times during transfers, excursions and meals. Hydration is essential at altitude, and your guides help you maintain a healthy routine.

Logistics, Borders, Visas & Insurance

Where does the expedition begin and end?
The journey begins in Calama, in Chile’s Atacama region. You are welcomed by a New Paths Expeditions representative and transferred to your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama. The expedition ends in Peru after visiting Sillustani and transferring to Juliaca airport for flights via Lima. Your guide assists you with all airport procedures. Assistance in Lima for your connection home is also included.
Are flights included in the price?
International flights are not included. Our U.S. air partner can assist with reservations for a small service fee. Domestic flights in Bolivia and Peru are billed separately and include complete NPE airport support.
Do U.S. travelers need visas?
Chile, Bolivia and Peru do not require visas for U.S. citizens. Bolivia does require you to complete an online entry form 48 hours before arrival. Your Expedition Advisor and Guide will assist you with this.
Are the border crossings complicated?
Our team handles all logistics, paperwork and timing. Weather, local conditions and other travelers at the border can influence processing times, but we work with highly experienced partners to ensure smooth crossings. These remote borders are fascinating places and often become memorable travel moments.
Do I need travel insurance?
Travel insurance is highly recommended and should include coverage for trip interruption, cancellation, repatriation, evacuation, medical coverage and baggage loss. Most of our regular Guests prefer USI Travel Insurance.

Activity Level & Experiences

What is the activity level of this trip?
The activity level is easy to moderate. You enjoy relaxed walks on uneven terrain, archaeological visits, cultural encounters and boat rides. Technical hiking is not part of the itinerary.
What cultural experiences are included?
You engage with local Andean communities, explore ancient Tiwanaku and Sillustani, and travel by private speedboat to Uros and Taquile islands. These visits offer insight into highland traditions, textiles, daily life and regional differences across the Altiplano.
Is this trip good for photography?
Yes. The Altiplano offers some of the most dramatic landscapes in the world, including lunar deserts, salt flats, volcanoes and multicolored highland lakes. Wildlife includes three species of flamingos, vicuñas and other Andean animals. You also meet local communities with distinct traditions and attire. Your guides often add extra stops when meaningful cultural or scenic opportunities arise, allowing you to make the most of each day. When photographing people, please be respectful and ask first; your guide is there to assist.

Extensions

What extensions are available for this expedition?
NPE offers several compatible extensions: Easter Island and Rapa Nui, Santiago and the Chilean wine country, Potosí and Sucre, Arequipa and Colca Canyon, and Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. All integrate naturally with the main itinerary.
How does the Easter Island (Rapa Nui) pre-extension work?
After a night in Santiago, you fly to Easter Island and enjoy three and a half full days exploring Ahu Tahai, Ahu Akivi, Rano Raraku, Tongariki and Anakena Beach while staying at the upscale Explora hotel. A final night in Santiago ensures a smooth connection to the Atacama departure.
What does the Potosí and Sucre extension include?
This extension is added to the middle of the main itinerary on private departures. From Uyuni, you travel to Potosí and Sucre to explore silver-mining history, Andean textiles at ASUR, colonial architecture and the impressive dinosaur tracks at Cal Orck’o, before flying to La Paz to rejoin the main route.
What does the Arequipa and Colca Canyon extension include?
After Lake Titicaca, you visit Sillustani en route to Colca Canyon, enjoy thermal pools, observe condors at Cruz del Cóndor, cross the 4,800-meter Patapampa Pass and end in Arequipa with a market visit, tasting menu at Chicha and exploration of the Santa Catalina Monastery before flying to Lima.
Can you add Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu?
Yes. This popular post-extension includes Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Pisac, Ollantaytambo and two nights at Machu Picchu, with the option to visit the citadel twice. It pairs perfectly with the Atacama, Uyuni and Lake Titicaca expedition.
Are other extensions possible, including private mirror-season or custom routes?
Yes. Over the years, guests have combined this expedition with time in Santiago and the Chilean wine region, Patagonia, Lima, northern Peru, the Amazon rainforest and even the Galapagos Islands. Private Uyuni mirror-season itineraries and fully customized Altiplano routes can be created based on your preferences. If you wish to explore any additional South American destinations, please contact your Expedition Advisor.

Booking, Payments & Policies

Are departures guaranteed, and how many guests travel on each expedition?
All expeditions are guaranteed with as few as two guests and capped at twelve. Boutique hotels and exclusive highlights—such as Palacio de Sal and dinner at Gustu in La Paz—are limited and fill quickly, so early booking is recommended. If a late reservation requires hotel changes you are not comfortable with, you receive a full refund of your deposit within five days of being informed.
What is your risk-free deposit policy?
If you change your mind within five days of making your deposit, you receive a full refund. No questions asked. After that period, the deposit is refundable minus a $500 processing fee, which you may use as credit toward a future expedition within three years.
What payment plans are available?
For select expeditions, we offer a four-installment payment plan. The first installment is due 210 days before departure, followed by scheduled payments leading up to the final balance. Full details are provided at the time of booking.
When is final payment due?
Your final payment is due 120 days before your expedition begins. You will receive your final invoice 140 days prior to departure.
How do I book this expedition?
Click here to check availability. If you prefer a private departure, click here. A $1,000 per-person deposit is required, and it is fully refundable within five days.
What pre-departure materials and communications will I receive?
One hundred days before departure, you will receive a complete pre-departure document that includes your itinerary, participant list, emergency contacts, packing list and all essential information to help you prepare for your Altiplano journey.

You will also receive a curated book and map, which—together with the pre-departure document—will help you prepare for your expedition. One week before your Atacama, Uyuni and Lake Titicaca tour begins, you will receive a Last-Minute Thoughts email that includes reminders about arriving in Calama, your transfer times, the itinerary of the first day and any other information essential for arriving and starting your trip with ease.

Your New Paths Expeditions Expedition Advisor will be available for you from the moment you book until you return back home.
What is your cancellation policy?
• 121+ days before departure: Refund minus a $500 administrative fee, which you may use as credit toward a future expedition within three years
• 120–91 days before departure: 50 percent refundable
• 90–61 days before departure: 25 percent refundable
• 60 days or fewer before departure: Non-refundable, as hotels, logistics and services are already contracted on your behalf.
What happens if NPE must cancel my departure?
If New Paths Expeditions cancels your departure, you receive a full refund of the land cost paid, or you may move your reservation to another departure or a different NPE journey.
How do you handle events beyond your control?
Weather, natural events, political decisions, pandemics or travel bans may affect operations in remote regions. We work with our partners to rebook your trip, adjust dates or recover funds whenever possible. Some local supplier payments may be non-refundable, but we pursue every reasonable option on your behalf. Travel insurance that includes trip interruption coverage is strongly recommended.
Do you offer flexible, interest-free payments?
Your balance is due 120 days before departure. Until then, you may pay in one installment or spread installments over time without interest, allowing you to secure your place while maintaining flexibility.
What payment methods do you accept?
We work with WeTravel as our payment gateway—one of the most established and secure platforms in the travel industry. Through them we accept Credit Card and ACH Transfer payments.
What level of personal care can I expect throughout the journey?
From the moment you book until you return home, your dedicated Expedition Advisor supports you every step of the way. You receive comprehensive pre-departure materials, including a detailed guide, packing list, practical advice and a printed book and map to enrich your preparation. During the journey, your Guides and local teams provide attentive care, clear communication and proven operational safety at all times.
